That's How We Roll – safe environment & shared passion
Short Vacation and Training Camp!
by Laila Ohlhoff (Brown Belt & Coach from Berlin)
I had the opportunity to attend the premiere of the "That's How We Roll" BJJ Camp hosted by chinkilla and Enyo Grappling. An experience that holds a special place in my heart.
The chinkilla team picked us up from the train station and brought us to the accommodation, which was located on the same grounds as the large sports hall. Surrounded by majestic mountains and a beautiful, clear lake, I was delightfully reminded of childhood vacations. However, what made this time truly unforgettable for me was not the nature, but the people and the atmosphere I experienced in the days that followed.
Particularly moving was the fact that women* from all corners of Germany and beyond came together to learn and network. Most of them rarely have the opportunity in their home gyms to train with other women* or share similar experiences. Here, at last, there was the chance to be among like-minded individuals* and to realize that we are many.
I have to admit that I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about women*-only events in the BJJ context. While I recognized their general value, I wasn’t certain if they would be the right fit for me. However, at this camp, I experienced how such an event can create an unparalleled atmosphere—one defined by intimacy, mutual respect, attentive listening, and a calmness that allowed even the quietest voices to be heard.
Especially in the combat sports world, where ego and competition often play a significant role, I found it incredibly refreshing to witness this dynamic. It reignited my love and gratitude for the sport in a profound way.
The skill levels of the participants* varied greatly, ranging from beginners* just starting their BJJ journey to experienced fighters* who had already come a long way. Everyone was able to learn from one another and from the coaches. The coaches paid equal attention to everyone. I believe everyone found their place.
What set this event apart from others was the close proximity to the coaches. Over several days, the physical closeness provided not only the opportunity to learn from them and train with them but also to sit together at breakfast and share conversations. It was an incredibly valuable chance to learn from their experiences.
And even though these were BJJ stars performing at a world-class level, the interaction was simply person-to-person. They also joined the Open Mats, which they typically avoid at mixed camps and seminars due to concerns about big egos and the injuries that can result.
There was a lot of training, a lot of laughter, and so much experience and technique shared. This weekend was more than just training—it was a unique experience where every participant*, regardless of their skill level, was a valuable part of it. I am incredibly grateful for this time and can hardly wait to be part of the next "That’s How We Roll"!
